License Plates Requirements
Each sate in the US has varying statutes and laws to suit their state's particular needs. Did you know that it is illegal to tie a giraffe to a lamppost in Connecticut? Duh? To each his own. One of the laws that are governed by state instead of the federal government are those laws concerning license plates.

In my state, car owners are required to attach license plates on both ends of the vehicle. There is also a requirement to stick a tab onto the lower right hand corner of the license plates. The license plates tab is paid for and replaced annually. After five years, the license plates are replaced. The price of the tabs depends on the age and value of the vehicle. The more expensive the vehicle, the more you spend on the tabs each year. Aside from paying for tab and license plate replacements, sales taxes at the time of purchase of the vehicle is also a requirement. The sales tax has to be paid each time the vehicle is sold.

In some states, license plates are paid for only at the time the car is purchased. The license plates for that vehicle remain with it as long as it is in use. License plates costs money especially if vanity plates are desired. Some states charge over $100.00/ letter or number and $250.00 for a symbol.

Other states issue license plates according to the area or county you live in. They place the name of your county on the license plates. Instead of two plates, only one is required.

The differences in state regulations concerning license plates affects law enforcement procedures in tracking fugitives and suspects. In states that have loose statutes regarding license plates, used plates can be purchased by anyone who wants them. This is a cheap method for evading the law.

Having a uniform system of laws on license plates nationwide would certainly be a great help to law enforcement. By looking at all the different statutes and forming a single law out of all of them, we just might come up the best on possible.
